It's a special little snowflake that was released long after Sonic 3 & Knuckles was, but despite that, it's an entry to the classic series given the numbered title and its style of gameplay. It tries its damnedest to emulate those games, right down to the music, to a point. But does it succeed? Short answer; no, not really. But to give it some credit for trying, it's not that bad.In terms of plot, it follows up after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which is why Sonic suddenly is taller and has green eyes...obviously. Regardless, Dr. Robotnik, who has decided to say "funk it" and call himself Dr. Eggman, returns to cause more havoc and destruction under a very tight budget thanks to the events of the last game, and it's up to our blue blur to stop him once again. Though...I get the feeling he's up to something a bit more involved this time, but what?
